Suspend.ed in Pink
Within my practice objects found and considered or explored under different circumstances are sometimes then moved into reserve: hidden in drawers or boxes where they may remain for months or even years. A project brief, or more specifically in this instance, the requirement for a particular colour can serve as a reminder, bringing these objects back to the forefront of my mind.
The ‘pink’ benchmark for this collection has not been a comfortable one. Working predominantly in earthy muted tones (possibly an influence from a 1970’s ‘magnolia’ coloured childhood) does not allow for the inclusion of such pigments. It has brought to question what associations does the colour Pink arouse? What objects and elements can I incorporate and repurpose utilising Pink? What does the colour Pink symbolise? Finally succumbing to the potential in a box of matches with somewhat bleached pink heads, I sought materials with which to combine and re-discovered a quilted 1940’s baking tin to compliment this hue.
As a maker of items which are predominantly ‘badges’, this collection and its colour association allude to a colour once unwanted as an identification label, but more recently adopted and acknowledged with a sense of pride.
