The silk cocoon
Introduced to the silk cocoon by a weaver, I realised I'd never questioned the origin of silk. After some searching, I purchased some free-range cocoons where the alkaline fluid released by the silk worm moth dissolved the cocoon, enabling the life-cycle to continue. In the production of silk however, a continuous thread is required. The pupa is therefore killed before the hole occurs, so the fibre can be harvested, undamaged. This narrative informed my collection.
